Sponsor MAIP’s Sixth Annual Awards Luncheon
The Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project is pleased to announce that our Sixth Annual Awards Luncheon will honor Senator Patrick Leahy for his work to protect the innocent, reform forensic science, and fund innocence work and the legal team that obtained habeas corpus relief for David Boyce. Our luncheon will be held at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, D.C. on July 11, 2013, and we hope you will join us to celebrate the efforts of Sen. Leahy and the Boyce victory.
Sen. Leahy, the longtime Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has been deeply committed to innocence work since 2001, when he initially introduced the Innocence Protection Act in the Senate. The act, passed in 2004, established a right to post-conviction DNA testing for individuals convicted in federal courts; created a mechanism for ensuring that crime laboratories investigate allegations or fraud or misconduct; and established the Kirk Bloodsworth Post-Conviction DNA Testing Program, which provides federal funding for post-conviction DNA testing. The Bloodsworth Program has led to the exoneration of three MAIP clients and seven other individuals nationwide. Sen. Leahy also has been a champion for forensic science reform, and important step toward preventing wrongful convictions.

We are also thrilled to honor the Winston & Strawn and Hunton & Williams team that recently represented David Boyce. Boyce was wrongfully convicted of a 1991 murder in Newport News, Virginia, based primarily upon the testimony of a dog-sniffing “expert” and a jailhouse informant who had testified in other cases. MAIP screened his case and, in 2004, referred the case to pro bono lawyers at Howrey LLP. That team, led by Rachel Strong and Eddie Ferrer, uncovered significant exculpatory evidence that had been withheld by the Commonwealth. The case ultimately was taken over by a team of lawyers from Winston & Strawn, led by David Koropp and Elizabeth Papez, who filed and litigated the successful federal habeas claim. Patricia Sulzbach of Hunton & Williams also was involved in the case throughout.
Please join us in honoring the tireless of efforts of Sen. Leahy and Mr. Boyce’s attorneys, as well as the strength of Mr. Boyce and our other innocent clients by sponsoring MAIP’s 2013 Luncheon. As a non-profit organization with a small staff and limited budget, your support is vital for MAIP to continue to assist the countless men and women in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia who have been wrongfully convicted, and to prevent future miscarriages of justice.
